Two years ago, on 18 September 2023, the Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar was reportedly killed. Since then, the relationship between India and Canada has been strained due to this news incident.

Recently, the US-based Khalistani outfit Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) has accused India of involvement in Nijjar's killing. The SFJ has released a poster featuring the new Indian High Commissioner, Dinesh Patnaik, with a target mark placed on his face. The SFJ has also threatened to 'siege' the Indian consulate in Vancouver, Canada on Thursday.

In response to the SFJ's allegations, the SFJ's statement refers to the role of Indian agents in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. However, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau admitted that his government did not provide hard evidentiary proof when it accused India of being involved in Nijjar's killing.

India, on the other hand, has accused the previous Trudeau government of casting aspersions on New Delhi for domestic vote bank politics. The SFJ claims that Indian Consulates continue to operate a spy network and surveillance targeting Khalistan Referendum campaigners.

Dinesh K. Patnaik is currently expected to take up his assignment shortly as the new Indian High Commissioner to Canada, but as of now, he is serving as India's Ambassador to Spain. The SFJ's threats have caused concern for the safety of the Indian diplomat.

In light of the SFJ's threats, the SFJ has asked Indo-Canadians planning to visit the consulate to choose an alternative date. The SFJ's actions have raised concerns about the escalating tensions between India and Canada.

As both countries navigate this delicate situation, it remains to be seen how the investigation into Nijjar's killing will progress, and whether the relationship between India and Canada will be able to recover from the strains caused by this news incident.
