Pro-Palestinian Protest Dispute in Düsseldorf: Court Ruling Squashes Police Ban

Once again, the streets of various North Rhine-Westphalia cities echoed with pro-Palestinian voices last Saturday. Approximately 200 individuals participated in demonstrations in Düsseldorf, Cologne, Bielefeld, and Dortmund, as reported by a dpa journalist on the scene.

In Düsseldorf, a legal tussle preceded the event: the police had barred the chanting of "Stop the genocide" or its appearance on posters. The Düsseldorf Administrative Court initially deemed this allowed, but later, the Münster Higher Administrative Court reversed the ban on Saturday, declaring it unlawful to prohibit the wording. The OVG spokesperson explained that although it didn't constitute a criminal offense, freedom of expression should be considered, and the slogan didn't appear to violate incitement to hatred or condoning certain criminal acts. However, the court stated that it was not clear how the slogan could be interpreted as condoning Hamas crimes, such as the October 7 terrorist attack.

On the other hand, Düsseldorf authorities prohibited slogans seemingly denying the state of Israel. Despite the fracas, the demonstration remained peaceful in Düsseldorf, and there were no reports of incidents or violations at the pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Cologne, Bielefeld, and Dortmund on Saturday as well.
