In a bid to sway potential voters, a new independent expenditure group, Livable Future PAC, has been launched to support Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani. The PAC, led by Pete Sikora, who also serves as NYCC's climate and inequality campaigns director, aims to make a difference in the upcoming elections.

Livable Future PAC believes Mamdani could be the key to furthering job creation, making energy bills more affordable, and lowering pollution. Their focus is on policies that maximize energy efficiency, a strategy they believe could win over African-American and Caribbean-American voters in Wakefield in the Bronx and East Flatbush/Canarsie in Brooklyn.

Recent polls indicate a promising outlook for Mamdani among Black voters. According to a YouGov/CBS poll conducted Sept. 7 to 13, Mamdani had a lead of 15 points over incumbent Governor Andrew Cuomo among Black voters. This advantage was further solidified in a Marist College poll conducted Sept. 8 to 11, with Mamdani leading by 21 points.

However, Cuomo's campaign spokesperson, Rich Azzopardi, dismissed Livable Future PAC's attempt to shift Black voters away from Cuomo and toward Mamdani.

The PAC plans to raise and spend about $50,000, which will fund at least two full-time staffers focused on messaging and canvassing. This effort is reminiscent of Mamdani's primary campaign, where more than 30,000 canvassers and phonebankers worked tirelessly to support his cause.

One strategy Livable Future PAC is employing is canvassing homeowners to highlight Mamdani's pro-climate policies. This could help NYCC build support for more local laws aimed at increasing energy efficiency. A notable policy Mamdani supports is the enforcement of Local Law 97, an energy efficiency mandate.

The PAC's efforts come at a time when the need for pro-climate policies is more crucial than ever. By focusing on sustainable food systems and climate change mitigation efforts, Livable Future PAC aims to target elections that align with these values.

In the targeted neighborhoods, Cuomo ran about 35 points ahead of Mamdani in the primary. However, with the support of Livable Future PAC, Mamdani hopes to bridge this gap and secure the votes of Black voters. If successful, this could potentially further Mamdani's job creation, energy efficiency, and pollution reduction policies.
