The Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) is set to kick off its 12th season in 2025, and the UP Yoddhas are gearing up for another exciting campaign. The team, which debuted in the league in 2017, has consistently been one of the more competitive sides, regularly qualifying for playoffs, except for Season 10.
This season, the Yoddhas have placed their trust in the defensive duo of Sumit Sangwan and Ashu Singh. Sumit Sangwan, a prominent defender for the team since his debut, has been appointed as the team's captain, while Ashu Singh takes on the role of vice-captain.
Sumit Sangwan's Journey and Achievements
Sangwan, who has played 112 matches and accumulated 326 tackle points, has been a cornerstone of the Yoddhas’ defense. He has achieved 24 "High 5s" (earning 5 or more tackle points in a match), showcasing his consistent defensive excellence. His debut season, in particular, was prolific, where he earned seven High 5s, marking a strong start to his professional kabaddi career.
Ashu Singh's Emergence as a Leader
Ashu Singh, known for his relentless work rate, unselfish play, and composure under pressure, has risen to a leadership role alongside Sangwan. While detailed individual statistics for Ashu Singh are less documented, his elevation to vice-captain demonstrates his importance and development within the team’s defensive unit.
Under head coach Jasveer Singh, a former Indian Army serviceman who has been with the Yoddhas since Season 6, both players have benefited from consistent coaching and a team environment, contributing to their growth.
