Pro golfer Brick in a pickle, steals show with borrowed clubs
In his third year as a pro golfer, Brick was scheduled to compete in the Web.com Tour's qualifying round, which is notorious for its toughness. His performance would determine whether he'd secure any starts, if any, on the Tour for the following season.
Panic set in when Brick discovered his trusted set of clubs missing from his rented Airbnb in Arizona on Sunday morning. The prospect of starting the tournament with his clubs gone was disheartening. Brick took to social media in desperation, offering 5 thousand dollars in cash with no strings attached.
Brick was in 74th place, ten strokes off the lead, heading into the fourth round. A wave of emotions washed over him, but he managed to shake it off. "I was riding an emotional roller coaster for about five minutes," Brick told GolfChannel.com. "I had a bit of anxiety, but I needed to let it go."
Through kindness and the help of some replacements in the pro shop, Brick was able to cobble together a makeshift set by 10:39 AM. He initially struggled, but what followed left everyone, including Brick himself, in awe. Brick ended the tournament with a 63, an impressive feat, given his adversity.
The turnaround was even more remarkable given Brick's start in the tournament. He began the day in the midst of a slump, with a disappointing first three rounds. This seemed to have an unexpectedly calming effect on him. Brick finished the tournament in 25th position, securing his spot in the first eight events of the Web.com Tour next year, beginning with the Great Exuma Classic on the Bahamas in January.
"There was an offensive mentality all day," Brick told GolfChannel.com. "It's okay to hit bad shots... I had a useless combination of clubs. People didn't expect me to hit the ball well. In a strange way, it was reassuring."
While it remains to be seen whether Brick decides to keep his mix-and-match set of clubs, his performance on Sunday will undoubtedly be a memory he cherishes for years to come.
