In the heated race for New York City's mayoral seat, the independent expenditure committee Empower NYC has become a significant player. The committee, led by Abe George, has attracted major donors, including Scott Lynn, founder and CEO of Masterworks.io, and Jean Marc-Chapus, co-founder of Crescent Capital.

Scott Lynn has shown his support for Mayor Eric Adams by donating a substantial sum of $500,000 to Empower NYC. Jean Marc-Chapus, through a trust called Etoiles Trust, has also contributed $250,000 to the PAC, with an earlier donation of $50,000 made in May.

Empower NYC's efforts to raise funds have been successful, with the PAC having collected over $1 million so far. These large donations from Lynn and Chapus have significantly boosted the committee's recent contributions.

In an effort to broaden its support base, Empower NYC is also working to attract donors from the cryptocurrency industry. This move suggests a diverse range of backers for the PAC.

The active involvement of Empower NYC in the mayoral race is noteworthy, as the general election in November has seen more independent expenditure committees than New York City typically has. The throng of PACs spending in the race could be read as a sign of the lack of agreement among anti-Mamdani forces on the best way to defeat Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani.

While Mayor Eric Adams' reelection campaign does not have public matching funds, Empower NYC operates like a full campaign, identifying Adams' voters and using a comprehensive field strategy to get those voters to the polls. This approach, according to George, is attracting support for the PAC.

Empower NYC has not announced a current funding goal or received any new major donations at the time of writing. However, the PAC aims to raise $15 million for the campaign.
