Pro-boxer Chong, from Hong Kong, demands unpaid bout fee while promoter considers legal retribution.
Hong Kong's top Muay Thai fighter Emily Chong Lok-ming recently vented her frustration on social media, claiming that a local promoter, Space One Champions Event, still owes tens of thousands of dollars to her and several other athletes following a competition held in Foshan, mainland China, last year.
In a bold move, Chong, a 19-year-old powerhouse in the ring, spoke publicly about the matter without disclosing the exact amount she's yet to receive. She told the Post she's been wrestling with the company founder, Joker Li Yiu-lun, since November last year, trying to secure her paycheck.
According to our sources, Space One owes at least HK$50,000 to various fighters who participated in the event. Initially, Li stayed silent when approached by the Post. However, Space One Production Limited eventually broke its silence, issuing a statement in response to the "false statements" circulating on social media.
In the statement, Space One accused its partners of withholding funds owed to them. The company expressed its apologies to the affected fighters and organizations and threatened legal action for the "dissemination of false information". Despite the controversy, it seems the fighting spirit of our local Muay Thai championwon't be deterred, as she continues her pursuit for justice in the ring and in the court of public opinion.
