Boosting Literacy with the Hessian Reading Promotion Prize
From a cozy author-meet-and-greet space to a hands-on crime thriller event, these innovative initiatives captured the hearts of the jury for the Hessian Reading Promotion Prize. The trio of winners—the Tannenbergschule support group, the FürDich association, and the Friedrichsdorf public library—will split the 15,000 euro prize money.
Minister of Art and Culture Angela Dorn (Greens) lauded these award-winning projects, emphasizing their unique appeal to children and young people with diverse experiences and backgrounds. The celebration took place in the distinguished city of Wiesbaden, the capital of Hesse.
The Tannenbergschule support group, a local entity in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district, will receive a generous 7000 euro grant. Their innovations include reading competitions, collaborative storytelling, a newspaper club, and even a "reading dog."
The FürDich association, based in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district, will receive 5000 euros. They transformed a humble garden shed into a vibrant library for junior bookworms, fostering an enjoyable and engaging literary atmosphere.
Lastly, the Friedrichsdorf public library in the Hochtaunus district will receive 3,000 euros for their captivating "Aktenzeichen Stadtbücherei ungelöst - Der Krimi-November für Kids" project, which immersed older children in self-written crime mysteries, culminating in a thrilling presentation by real-life law enforcement officials. For the younger attendees, there was a charming "reading festival for little detectives."
