Private investment group Mercury13 gains ownership of English football club Bristol City, broadening their financial horizons in the sport.

In a significant move for women's football in England, Mercury13, a leading women's football investment fund backed by Juan Mata and Giorgio Chiellini, has acquired a majority stake in second-tier Bristol City Women FC. The deal, pending approval from the league, will see Mercury13 bring their expertise and resources to the club, aiming to build something special alongside the Bristol community.

Currently sitting eighth in the FA WSL 2 after two games, Bristol City Women will continue to call Ashton Gate their home, having reached a new long-term agreement to remain at the stadium. This decision recognises the growth in women's football, a trend acknowledged by Stephen Lansdown, the current owner of Bristol City Women. Lansdown believes that the right investment partner at the right time has been found for the club.

Lansdown, known for his involvement with Hargreaves Lansdown, has decided to relinquish control of Bristol City Women but will retain ownership of the men's side and the two adjacent Bristol Bears rugby teams. Mario Malave of Mercury13 has expressed his excitement about the acquisition, praising Bristol City Women's rich history, track record of performance, world-class infrastructure, and loyal supporters.

The acquisition comes at an opportune time, as the English top flight of women's football, the WSL, is set to expand to 14 teams for the 2026-27 season. The top two teams in the second division will be promoted automatically, with the third-place team playing a relegation play-off against the bottom WSL club, currently Michele Kang's London City.

Mercury13 was advised on the acquisition by Northridge Law LLP and Deloitte, ensuring a smooth transition for the club. The investment group, which already includes FC Como Women in its portfolio, has made it clear that they view the entry into the English football pyramid as a major milestone.

With the revamped Women's Super League scheduled for next season, the future looks bright for Bristol City Women under their new ownership. The club's loyal supporters can look forward to seeing their team compete at the highest level of women's football in England.
