Actress and Entrepreneur Shomi Kaiser Released from Prison

After a dramatic legal battle, Shomi Kaiser, a well-known actress and entrepreneur, was released from Kashimpur Women’s Central Jail in Gazipur on the night of August 14-15, 2025. The release came following the High Court's decision to grant her bail in two separate cases related to the killing of two people during the July student-led mass uprising.

The release time was confirmed by Gazipur Additional District Magistrate Salma Khatun at 10:40 pm. Shomi Kaiser had been held at the prison since her arrest on November 6, 2024, following an attempted murder case filed at Uttara East Police Station, Dhaka, for injuring a person during the uprising.

Initially, Shomi Kaiser was granted three months' bail by the High Court on December 8, 2024, but it was suspended by the Appellate Division on December 12. However, she was re-granted bail again recently on August 11, 2025.

Background and Political Affiliations

Beyond her acting career, Shomi Kaiser is also known for her involvement in business, holding positions such as the president of the e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-CAB) and a director of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI). However, her exact political party ties or roles have not been publicly documented in connection with these legal proceedings.

Shomi Kaiser's father, Shahidullah Kaiser, was a martyred intellectual, and her mother, Panna Kaiser, was an author, researcher, child organiser, and former MP. In the past, Shomi Kaiser served as a member of the Awami League's Liberation War Affairs subcommittee. She also sought the Awami League's nomination for the Feni-3 constituency in the 2024 general election, though she did not receive it.

Recent Developments

Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, 2025, Shomi Kaiser resigned from her position as e-CAB president. It remains to be seen what her future plans are in the political and business spheres.
