Prison sentences handed out to beach-goers in Jūrmala, Latvia, for engaging in disorderly conduct.

In a recent court ruling, two Latvian citizens born in 1980 and 1982 were sentenced for public order violations that took place at Majori Beach in Jūrmala last year on July 16.

The incident, which was captured on a video recording and later published on social media, showed Russian-speaking holidaymakers challenging and cursing a Jūrmala municipal police officer, as well as lifeguards of the Jūrmala Rescue Service.

The accused, later identified as Artjoms Borisovs and Dmitrijs Napriyenko, were accused of using offensive words towards human dignity and showing increasing aggression. They also threatened to use violence against the inspector and demanded that he leave the premises.

The video recording further revealed that one of the accused called on bystanders to engage in violence against the inspector. As a result, two Jūrmala Municipality Police inspectors - lifeguards were forced to interrupt their duties to ensure the physical safety of the inspector.

The verdict, however, has not yet entered into force, and it can be appealed to the Riga Regional Court. Artjoms Borisovs was sentenced to seven months' imprisonment, while Dmitrijs Napriyenko was given a suspended sentence of six months.

It is worth noting that the accused have no previous criminal convictions. The incident has raised concerns about public order and respect for authority in Jūrmala, a popular tourist destination in Latvia.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining peace and order in public spaces, and the consequences that may follow when such behaviour is disregarded. It is crucial for everyone to respect the law and the authority of those who uphold it.

The sentencing of Artjoms Borisovs and Dmitrijs Napriyenko, two Latvian citizens, for their involvement in a public order violation at Majori Beach in Jūrmala, has been widely covered in the media, featuring prominently in discussions about politics, general-news, and crime-and-justice. This incident, which involved Russian-speaking holidaymakers shouting insults and threatening a Jūrmala Municipal police officer, has sparked concerns about public order and respect for authority in Latvia, particularly in Jūrmala, a popular tourist destination.
