By: Andreas Thieme

Alfons Schuhbeck, the renowned chef, faces a health crisis that leaves him unfit for imprisonment - rumors suggest he might have cancer. The legal authorities are mulling over the best course of action as doctors evaluate his condition. Despite his changing status, Schuhbeck's trial for fraud and insolvency charges remains scheduled for June 24.

Munich - Fresh turmoil escalates around Alfons Schuhbeck (76)! As a former celebrity chef, Schuhbeck's health worsens to the point he can't be incarcerated. Instead, he's receiving medical care in Munich. Although his upcoming trial for fraud and insolvency charges is slated for June 24, there's speculation it might still proceed. Since August 2023, Schuhbeck has been serving a prison sentence for tax evasion, with a possible release date in October 2026.

Schuhbeck's Health Prevents Imprisonment - Is Cancer a Possibility?

News reports announced a suspension of Schuhbeck's sentence due to health concerns as early as May. When an inmate requires medical attention unable to be provided inside a prison, they must receive treatment outside. Schuhbeck has reportedly been out of JVA Rothenfeld prison in Andechs for at least five weeks, residing instead in his Platzl apartment in Munich. Medical visits are frequent.

Prison Return Uncertain

"The temporary suspension of execution lasts until 08.06.23," states Chief Public Prosecutor Anne Leiding. "We're assessing whether and how Schuhbeck's essential medical treatment can be continued in prison. Until this examination concludes, he's not required to report to JVA for further prison sentence execution."

Reports Claim Cancer - No Confirmation

As of now, authorities are gathering information on Schuhbeck's health status to decide his prisoner status. Doctors play a significant role in this decision. Bild newspaper speculates that Schuhbeck has cancer, yet the Munich I Public Prosecutor's Office denies this claim, citing privacy concerns. "We won't comment on Schuhbeck's exact illness," says Chief Public Prosecutor Anne Leiding.

On the Loose - The Trial Still Holds

Although Schuhbeck's health problems seem to delay his return to prison, details about his attendance at the June 24 trial remain unclear. Photos taken recently reveal a gaunt and pale Schuhbeck.

Meanwhile, the Munich I Regional Court is preparing the criminal proceedings as usual, as indicated by court spokesperson Laurent Lafleur. Neither the court nor the public prosecutor's office has confirmed Schuhbeck's inability to show up in court.
