Prioritizing construction of play areas over novel ideas

In an unexpected move, the city of Cologne has recently spent 38,000 euros on rebranding its playgrounds as "play and action areas." This decision, made by city councilor Philipp Salevsky, has sparked a heated debate, with opinions divided and emotions running high.

The renaming of playgrounds is seen as a symbolic political action, a move to address the expanded inclusion concept and the diversity of users in terms of age, cultural background, and possible disabilities. However, the term "playground" was deemed limiting and outdated in the rebranding process.

Bernd Wilberg, a prominent figure in the city's political sphere, has been associated with the topic. He has been vocal about the need for change, advocating for a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all children and youth.

However, not everyone is convinced. Critics argue that the proposal to rename playgrounds is absurd, questioning whether the new play and action area signs provide real support for children and youth. Some parts of politics continue to defend the rebranding process and praise the participation process, but others imply that symbolic politics may be favored over actual action.

The article, published on July 24, 2025, in Issue 8/2025 of an unspecified publication, also criticizes the use of new terms as a replacement for providing real support. It suggests that the renaming of playgrounds is not a solution, but rather a superficial one, that may not address the actual needs of children and youth.

The city council is expected to decide in September whether the rebranding of playgrounds continues. The new signs for the play and action areas feature gender-neutral and diverse figures, a move aimed at promoting inclusivity and diversity.

As the debate rages on, it remains to be seen whether the rebranding will bring about the desired change or if it will be perceived as replacing actual action. One thing is certain: the issue has certainly stirred up a storm in the political arena and beyond.
