Prince William Honors Climate Innovators at Earthshot Prize in Rio
The Earthshot Prize awards ceremony took place in Rio de Janeiro, with Prince William in attendance. The event recognized innovative solutions to combat climate change and protect the planet. Winners included Brazilian startup re.green, Bangladeshi non-profit organization Friendship, Colombian capital Bogota, Lagos Fashion Week, and the United Nations High Seas Treaty. Each winner received US$1.3 million in grants.
The Earthshot Prize, created by Prince William in 2020 to find investors and scale up solutions for CO2 removal, waste reduction, and land and ocean protection, held its ceremony featuring musical performances by Anitta, Gilberto Gil, Shawn Mendes, Kylie Minogue, and Seu Jorge. During his visit, Prince William focused on climate change and conservation, visiting the Guapimirim mangrove area and attending a global wildlife summit. He also met prominent figures such as Gisele Bündchen, Cate Blanchett, and King Rania of Jordan.
The High Seas Treaty, one of the winners, aims to protect marine environments outside of national jurisdictions. Prince William's trip to Rio marks the halfway point of his 10-year commitment to the Earthshot Prize. Following the awards, he will attend the COP30 summit in Belem to discuss carbon emission reduction efforts.
