Delighted by the royal visit, our City Princeling, Rainer I., graced us at the state parliament accompanied by his retinue. The SPD state parliamentarians, Sonja Bongers and Freddy Cordes, expressed their joy, albeit with some levity, over this seemingly unusual visit.

This was a rare occasion, as it marked the first time carnivalistic leaders from NRW's communities had graced the halls of the state parliament.

Accompanied by his entourage, including Sonja Bongers and Frederick Cordes, state parliamentarians from Oberhausen, Prince Rainer I brought a sense of cultural heritage to the state parliament. Rainer Lettkamp, known as Prince Rainer I, has been a symbolic leader and representative of the carnival festivities since his selection as Prinz.

Bongers, in particular, was moved by the sight of so many carnivalists in the state parliament, remarking that it was a reminder of what had been missed during the pandemic-related cancellation of carnival. She believes the return of carnival is significant for the citizens of Oberhausen and North Rhine-Westphalia, as it revives a sense of cultural heritage in the state parliament.

Rainer Lettkamp's motto, 'Celebrate, sing, dance together, for everyone is a part of the whole', resonates with the idea of carnival, according to the SPD politicians. This visit by Prince Rainer I was a celebration not just of the carnival, but also of the spirit of social togetherness and traditional celebration that lies at the heart of the carnival culture in North Rhine-Westphalia.
