Prime Minister Modi honors Mahavir on his birth commemoration day
The Indian government has announced a new initiative to promote the study of Jainism and its ancient language, Prakrit. This move is part of the government's efforts to preserve and promote India's rich cultural heritage.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address on Lord Mahavir's birth anniversary, paid tribute to the revered leader and emphasised the importance of understanding Jainism and its contributions to Indian culture. He highlighted the recent recognition of Prakrit as a classical language by the government, a decision announced in 2021.
Under this initiative, universities across the country are invited to express their interest in setting up a Chair in Jain Studies. The Chair will focus on research and teaching related to Jain philosophy, literature, and history. It is expected to provide a platform for scholarly research and discourse on Jainism.
The Chair in Jain Studies will be open for applications from scholars and researchers in the field of Jainism. The government has allocated a budget of Rs. 100 crores for the implementation of this initiative.
The government has expressed hope that this initiative will lead to a greater appreciation of Jainism and its values among the youth. Lord Mahavir's ideals have inspired people globally, according to Prime Minister Modi, and this initiative is a reaffirmation of the government's commitment to Mahavir's vision.
The government believes that this initiative will not only contribute to a better understanding of Jainism but also foster a deeper appreciation for India's cultural diversity. Universities interested in setting up a Chair in Jain Studies are encouraged to apply.
