Prime Minister Modi delivers longest Independence Day address from Red Fort, lasting 103 minutes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a historic 103-minute-long speech on Independence Day 2022, marking his 12th consecutive address from the Red Fort. This speech was the longest ever delivered by the Prime Minister and focused on India's vision for a self-reliant and developed nation by 2047, known as "Viksit Bharat 2047."

The speech emphasized several key topics, including India's journey towards self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat), bold plans for economic and technological progress, and a call for citizens to define India's destiny. Modi highlighted technological growth, with cleared government approvals for four semiconductor manufacturing units with "Made in India" chips expected by year-end. He also saluted the armed forces for their role in Operation Sindoor, following a terror attack in Pahalgam.

In the realm of defence systems, Modi announced Mission Sudarshana Chakra, a new weapons system designed to neutralize attacks from enemies and hit back. The Prime Minister also vowed to protect farmers' interests and did not specify any policy threat to their well-being.

The new GST reforms were announced as a Diwali gift, with the expectation that they will provide relief to MSMEs, local vendors, and consumers, as well as reduce taxes on essential goods. Modi's speech did not mention any specific policy threats to farmers' interests or the recent announcement of US tariffs for Indian imports.

The speech surpassed Modi’s own previous records, including a 98-minute speech in 2024 and stood far longer than past prime ministerial addresses from the Red Fort, including Nehru’s 72-minute speech in 1947. The speech was delivered on the 79th Independence Day of India and repeatedly underlined the theme of self-reliance, bold plans for economic and technological progress, and a call for citizens to define India's destiny, making it a historic and comprehensive national address.
