Prices of fuel continue to descend precipitously ahead of the August 15 bridgehouse span
As the 15th of August weekend approaches, drivers in Spain are enjoying a welcome relief at the pumps. According to the General Directorate of Traffic, more than seven million journeys are expected during this period, and the cost of filling up a vehicle is significantly cheaper compared to recent years.
Fuel prices in Spain have been on a downward trend, reaching levels comparable to those in 2021. As of early August 2025, petrol costs approximately €1.49 per litre, a decline of roughly 7.3% compared to the previous year. Diesel, on the other hand, stands at €1.43 per litre, representing a drop of 2.8%.
Filling a medium-sized tank (55 litres) with petrol would cost around €81.70, a savings of approximately €6.50 compared to 2024. Diesel tank refills currently cost around €78.26, a decrease from €80.24 a year ago.
This decline in fuel prices is linked to a drop in Brent crude oil prices from over $120 per barrel in 2022 to around $67 now. Geopolitical factors, such as the war in Ukraine, have played a significant role in this decrease. Despite a typical summer price increase due to higher demand, overall fuel costs remain well below recent historical highs.
The average price of a liter of gasoline is currently below 1.591 euros, a price point last seen before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Similarly, the price of diesel in Spain is lower than the EU average of 1.540 euros per liter. The cost of unleaded gasoline 95 in Spain is also lower than the eurozone average of 1.667 euros.
The decreasing fuel prices have been a trend for two weeks, with the evolution in the quotation of crude oil not directly reflected in the prices of fuels with a time lag. Despite this delay, the prices have been consistently dropping, making a significant difference in the wallets of Spanish drivers.
In a unique twist, the usual dynamic of diesel being more expensive than gasoline was restored in mid-February 2023, but diesel has since been below the price of gasoline for 128 weeks. The average price of a liter of diesel has fallen by 0.63% and stands at 1.423 euros, while the average price of a liter of gasoline has decreased by 0.2% and stands at 1.483 euros.
For the whole of 2025, the cumulative decrease in diesel prices is 1.4%, and the cumulative decrease in gasoline prices is 2.75%. Fuel prices are at their lowest so far this summer, offering a much-needed respite for drivers during the busy 15th of August weekend.
