Canteen Prices: A Hike at Some Uni Cafeterias

Prices for food items generally persist at steady levels - Prices largely stay unaffected on a monthly basis

Gotta pay more for your grub at some uni cafeterias, according to the German Press Agency's recent survey. While most universities in Lower Saxony and Bremen keep prices stable for the summer semester, certain spots could have you shelling out more dough.

Here's the truth about the increased costs: Starting April 1, students in Göttingen will be faced with a 40-cent bump on all canteen dishes. For instance, your beloved currywurst with fries and salad will now set you back 4.20 euros instead of the earlier 3.80. The increased costs are to do with higher wage tariffs, energy expenses, and procurement costs, with the state's financial aid falling short for years, as per Managing Director Jörg Magull.

Not that long ago, Göttingen's Student Services even penned an open letter for more dough. Come December, the so-called Lower Saxony menu (costing 2.50 euros) was axed in the Ostniedersachsen region due to expired funding. But hey, don't fret! The StudiDeal offer (2.95 euros) is still around, along with meals under the three-euro mark. No further price hikes are in the works for the StudiDeal.

Now, let's talk about Hannover. The Student Services there raised costs from January 1, and they're aiming for another hike in September with an average 19% spike. The good news is, the ever-popular "Pasta & Friends" offer has a price cap, so it won't cost you more than a couple of euros. Initially, the Student Services in Bremen and Oldenburg will hold steady with prices.

In Oldenburg, canteen prices range from 1.50 euros for a one-dish meal to 2.20 euros for pasta dishes, 2.90 euros for green cabbage, 2.95 euros for vegan currywurst, and up to 3.90 euros for fried fish with potato sticks.

Price hikes in canteens can be due to several factors like inflation, supply chain troubles, operational costs, and market pressures. Specific reasons for price increases in certain regions like Göttingen and Hannover may be linked to local economic conditions, student preferences, and government policies.
