Prices for tariffs and tickets to increase effective from August 1, 2025, in Westphalia
Westphalia Public Transport to Undergo Price Adjustment and Digital Transition
Starting from August 1, 2025, Westphalia's bus and rail services will see a fare increase of approximately 5.3% due to rising costs in wages, fuel, electricity, and infrastructure investments such as new buses and trains. This adjustment applies to the WestfalenTarif regions, including Münsterland/Ruhr-Lippe, Paderborn/Höxter, Westfalen-Süd, and Ostwestfalen-Lippe.
In a bid to modernise and digitalise the WestfalenTarif system, tickets that require validation will become obsolete. From November 1, 2025, ticket validators in buses, trains, and on platforms will be gradually removed. Instead, tickets sold will be valid immediately or with a fixed start time/date, eliminating the need for manual validation.
This digital transition includes the adoption of app-based ticketing and automatic post-trip billing, similar to NRW-wide systems. The eezy app, interfacing with WestfalenTarif, is expected to play a significant role in this transformation.
In Paderborn, the 4-ticket will remain available in paper form for adults and children, and can be purchased and validated in the bus even after August 1, 2025. In Bad Lippspringe, the 1-Euro Ticket, valid for 90 minutes within the city area, is being introduced.
In the districts of Unna, the 10-ticket can be purchased and used as a digital ticket via known ticketing apps, even after November 1, 2025. In Bocholt, the 10-ticket will continue to be issued for adults and children beyond August 1, 2025, and can be validated in Bocholt city buses until approximately 2028 due to contractual agreements.
The Westfalen-Süd Transport Association is discontinuing the 9 am Monthly Ticket Westfalen-Süd, the Apprentice Ticket Westfalen-Süd, and the FlexiTicket Year (Westfalen-Süd, valid for one year from the date of purchase).
For detailed regional fare tables or technologies for each subregion, further direct sources from WestfalenTarif or local transit authorities may be needed. Ticket prices from August 1, 2025, can be found on the website: www.westfalentarif.de/prices.
Public transport users will continue to use the electronic airline tariff eezy.nrw, the day ticket 24, and the single ticket for occasional trips. The 90-minute ticket will also be offered as a chip card in Münster and Hamm.
For more specific information about the fare changes and digital transition details in the regions of Paderborn/Höxter, Westfalen-Süd, and Ostwestfalen-Lippe, please refer to the WestfalenTarif network-wide changes.
Individuals living in or visiting East Westphalia might find an interest in exploring various sports, as digital innovations are revolutionizing Westphalia's public transport system, enhancing accessibility and convenience for commuters. With the integration of app-based ticketing and automatic post-trip billing, the eezy app could potentially provide a seamless way to purchase tickets for both sports events and public transport.
