Prices at the pump remain constant during the passing of summer
Summer 2025 Gas Prices Remain Stable Across the U.S.
Summer 2025 has been a season of moderate, stable gas prices in the United States, with the national average for a gallon of regular gas hovering near $3.16. This figure represents a slight decrease from earlier in the year and a notable drop compared to last summer's average of $3.51.
The relative stability in gas prices can be attributed to crude oil prices averaging around $65 per barrel, which has prevented the large swings in pump prices that are common in other years. Crude oil prices have mostly stayed below $70/barrel, ensuring a level of price predictability.
However, state-by-state variations exist. For instance, states like Oregon have experienced higher-than-average prices, with an average of about $3.97 per gallon in July 2025, while the city of Bend saw a slightly lower average of $3.77. Other states tend to have prices closer to the national average or below it, but exact figures vary by regional supply and taxes.
In contrast, Mississippi boasts the cheapest gas price in the nation at $2.70 per gallon. California, on the other hand, has the highest price at $4.48 per gallon.
The stability in gas prices this summer is also due to factors such as a stable crude oil supply and inventories slightly below the five-year average. Seasonal factors like the use of summer-blend gasoline, which is costlier to produce, have had limited impact given current crude prices. Local factors like refining capacity and state fuel taxes cause considerable regional price differences.
Electric vehicle charging costs vary regionally as well. For example, West Virginia has the highest average rate at 52 cents/kWh, while Kansas has the lowest at 25 cents/kWh.
Looking ahead, the Energy Information Administration forecasts gasoline prices to average below $2.90/gal nationally in 2026, suggesting a possible downward trend after summer 2025.
This summer's calm fuel market is a welcome relief for travellers. The AAA TripTik Travel planner can help identify current gas and EV charging prices along routes, ensuring a smoother journey. Despite an increase in gasoline demand, prices have not spiked, making this summer one of the calmest fuel-wise in recent memory, with pump prices remaining flat and no major oil shocks on the horizon.
