An Unprecedented Selection: Leo XIV Joins the Ranks of These Preceding Popes
Previously Labeled Popes under the Name Leo
Hear ye, hear ye! The newest Pope has graced us with the name Leo XIV, reminiscent of a long line of popes who have played pivotal roles in the Church's rich history—and one who met an untimely end.
Leo the XIVth, chosen by American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, draws inspiration from Leo I, hailed as Leo the Great, who was the first Pope to establish himself as the representative of Apostle Peter. He laid claim to overall responsibility and authority over the Church, based on his position as the First of the Apostles.
Unlike Leo I, who sought solace in Rome, nearly all of his fellow Leos hailed from present-day Italy. Among them was Leo III, who took refuge with Charlemagne in Paderborn and later crowned the emperor in 800, setting the tone for the Holy Roman Empire's influence.
But history took a grim turn for Leo V, who ended his pontificate in deadly violence. He was imprisoned and put to death at the order of antipope Christophorus, who usurped his office. Leo VIII, on the other hand, was elected under the leadership of Emperor Otto I, but his reign was marred by the returning deposed Pope John, forcing his opponent to flee to the emperor for safety.
Leo IX, born in Eguisheim, Alsace, bucked the trend by not being Italian. He emphasized the role of the College of Cardinals in Church leadership and reorganized the papal administration.
Fast forward to the last Leo, Leo XIII, who ruled from 1878 to 1903, is known for his focus on social justice. He advocated for workers' rights, social justice, and even resolved conflicts with Switzerland and many Latin American states. It's believed that Leo XIV could follow in his footsteps, becoming a "Peace Pope."
As to what the future holds for Leo XIV, University of Augsburg's Professor of Church History Jörg Ernesti suggests that the new Pope may be looking to connect with Leo XIII, having chosen the same name and emphasizing peace in his pronouncements. Let us hope that the legacy of these popes, both noble and troubled, will continue to shape the Church in years to come.
Recently, the Vatican announced the conclave's selection of the 14th Pope named Leo, echoing the name of previous popes. The newly elected Leo XIV, inspired by Leo I, has chosen to emphasize peace in his teachings, much like Pope Leo XIII. Intriguingly, the new Pope's choice of name seems to indicate a connection with his predecessor, who generally focused on social justice and peace. Interestingly, a WhatsApp group named "Leo 799" has been created, suggesting an unexpected interface between the international Catholic church and sports-betting enthusiasts, who are placing bets on the number of years the new Pope Leo XIV might serve.
