Previewing Report from Wiesbaden: Preparing for Potential Hostilities amidst Russian Threat

In the heart of western Germany, near the Rhine River, the headquarters of USAREUR-AF resides at Clay Kaserne. This city, Wiesbaden, was spared significant bombing during World War II as it was not a major industrial center.

The USAREUR-AF, with responsibility for overseeing Army operations across two continents populated by over two billion people, has recently shifted its focus to the Eastern Flank Deterrence Line (EFDL). This new strategy aims to counter potential threats and deter war in Europe.

The EFDL is a novel concept for USAREUR-AF, designed to address three key operational challenges facing NATO: Russia's ability to mass forces, NATO's shortage of forces in theater, and Moscow's capacity to disrupt reinforcements from the United States.

The EFDL combines NATO's long-range precision fires, unmanned systems, and layered defenses to counter Russian antiaccess/area-denial capabilities. Notably, it is inextricably linked with NATO through USAREUR-AF's role as a combined joint force land component command headquarters operating as a single team alongside NATO's Allied Land Command.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine and ongoing sabotage efforts across Europe have forced NATO to refocus on being ready to fight and win a conventional war on the continent. In response, USAREUR-AF has been actively working to improve readiness for war, sharing knowledge and experience, building ties across organizations, and enhancing its capabilities.

One such initiative is Project Flytrap, which is currently testing drone swarms, systems to counter drone threats, and rapid targeting tools in realistic operational environments. Additionally, Task Force X is experimenting with artificial intelligence, robotics, and data fusion to speed decision-making and joint effects.

It is essential to note that NATO has no intent, desire, or plan to invade Russia. The EFDL is purely a defensive strategy aimed at deterring war and maintaining peace in Europe.

The work of soldiers and civilians from various nations, as part of USAREUR-AF, may determine whether a bigger war in Europe occurs. These individuals, who are US military personnel and civilians supporting US military operations in the European and African theaters, are playing a crucial role in maintaining stability and security in the region.

The situation in Europe is complex and dynamic, with tensions between NATO and Russia escalating in recent years. However, with initiatives like the EFDL and ongoing collaborative efforts, USAREUR-AF is working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of its allies and the wider European community.
