Prevent the temptation of coercing Kalonzo to enter the government, advise senators to Ruto
Opposition Senators Urge Ruto to Drop Bid for Kalonzo Musyoka
Five Kenyan opposition senators have called on President William Ruto to abandon his efforts to bring Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka into his government. The senators, including Joe Nyotu, Enoch Wambua, John Kinyua, John Methu, and Karungo Thangwa, have expressed concerns that such a move would weaken opposition unity and dilute the opposition's strength against Ruto's administration.
The call to resist Ruto's co-opting strategy comes amidst significant political tension between the President and Kalonzo Musyoka. The Wiper party leader has publicly accused Ruto of stifling the judiciary’s freedom and citizens' political association rights. The party remains firm about not joining Ruto's government, reinforcing the idea that Musyoka's inclusion is controversial within opposition circles.
The senators' call is rooted in preserving opposition cohesion. They argue that a united opposition will force President Ruto to leave office, and their focus is on removing him from power in 2027. However, it's important to note that Sifuna, the ODM Secretary General, did not explicitly declare that Musyoka will remain in the opposition.
Sifuna, unlike some of his colleagues, did not express dislike of President Ruto personally or describe his administration as a disappointment to Kenyans. Instead, he criticized Ruto's administration and accused it of being the greatest threat to devolution. Sifuna also stated that the biggest problem in Kenya is at State House and needs to be changed.
Senator Wambua, on the other hand, accused President Ruto's administration of abducting and killing youth, a serious allegation that has not been substantiated. It's worth noting that Sifuna did not make such accusations.
The senators' call comes at a time when county governments are on the brink of collapse due to delayed funds, according to Sifuna's warning. This adds to the political pressure on Ruto's administration, which is already facing criticism over its handling of various issues.
In conclusion, the opposition senators are urging President Ruto to reconsider his plan to bring Musyoka into his government, citing concerns about opposition unity and the need to remove Ruto from power in 2027. The senators' call is part of a broader effort by the opposition to present a strong front against Ruto ahead of elections.
