The Democrats are on a rebuilding spree post their election defeat, and some potential candidates are already gearing up for the next race to the presidency. Pete Buttigieg, the former Transportation Secretary in the Biden administration, appears to be eyeing another shot at the Oval Office.

Although Donald Trump's second term is just underway, Democrats are already weighing their options for the 2028 election. One of the front-runners for the Democratic presidential nomination is none other than Pete Buttigieg.

Despite Donald Trump's two-term tenure, Democrats are already casting their gaze toward the future. One candidate consistently mentioned as a top contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination is Pete Buttigieg.

The former Urbanist Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and Transportation Secretary in the Biden administration, has made it clear that he will not be contesting the vacant Senate seat in Michigan or the governorship. "I've made the decision to not seek the governor or U.S. Senate seats for Michigan in '26," Buttigieg stated on television. "Michigan's choice for governor and U.S. senate is crucial, but I'm not going to run for either post. However, my focus remains on consolidating, communicating, and supporting a vision for an alternative."

Several unnamed sources close to Buttigieg, who preferred to remain anonymous, revealed to Politico that his decision was strategically driven to gain a favorable starting position for his presidential bid and the logistical challenges of running consecutive campaigns spanning 2026 and 2028.

Long-time Democratic operative David Axelrod commented to Politico, "The toughest decision in politics is to let go of a winnable race. Buttigieg was a top-tier newcomer, making him a great candidate for the Senate race if he had opted to run. But if he had won in 2026, he might not have been a viable contender for the presidency in 2028."

In various polls for the Democratic presidential nomination, the 43-year-old Buttigieg is lagging behind Kamala Harris, who lost her bid in last year's election. Harris is now being hinted at as a possible candidate for governor in her home state of California, where the incumbent governor, Gavin Newsom, is term-limited. Newsom is also being considered as a potential candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.

The Commission, as part of the Democrats' preparations for the 2028 financial year draft budget, might consider Pete Buttigieg's potential presidential bid. After declining the vacant Senate seat in Michigan for 2026, Pete Buttigieg's decision to forego the governorship might indicate his focus on his presidential aspirations. On Whatsapp groups discussing the 2028 election, names like Kamala Harris, who is rumored to run for governor in California, and Newsom, a potential presidential candidate, are frequently mentioned alongside Buttigieg.
