Presidential election in Poland: boxer versus city mayor
Poland is stepping into a new political chapter as they choose a successor for outgoing President Andrzej Duda. This decision could determine if Poland continues on a liberal, pro-European trajectory led by Donald Tusk's government, or if the right-wing forces reclaim the reins.
With Duda, who hails from the national-conservative PiS party, ineligible for a second term due to serving ten years in office, a dozen men and one woman are vying for the position. Two stand out among the crowd - Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski and independent historian Karol Nawrocki, who has PiS's backing.
Trzaskowski's Poll Lead
According to latest polls, Trzaskowski is leading the race, representing Tusk's liberal-conservative Civic Coalition. Nawrocki follows closely in second, bolstered by PiS support. Far-right Konfederacja's Slawomir Mentzen is unlikely to secure the required majority, setting up a runoff in two weeks.
Struggle Between Tusk and Kaczynski
Poland, an EU and NATO member, finds itself at the frontline amidst pressure, war in Ukraine, fears of Russian sabotage, and doubts about U.S. support. Yet again, the presidential election reverberates as a battle between the two camps that have dominated Polish politics for 20 years, Tusk's Civic Coalition against PiS, headed by Jaroslaw Kaczynski.
The PiS governed Poland from 2015 to 2023, putting the judiciary under their control, sparking a long-standing dispute with Brussels, and straining relations with Berlin by demanding reparations in the billions. Since late 2023, Tusk has been at the helm, governing with a center-left coalition. He requires Trzaskowski's victory to counteract PiS's erosion of democracy and the rule of law, as well as to advance Poland's integration into the EU.
Trzaskowski's Centrist Shift
The 53-year old social scientist Trzaskowski, fluent in five languages, champions liberalism and strong ties with Europe. However, he has recently moved towards the center, advocating for stricter measures against irregular migrants at the border with Belarus and restricting social benefits for Ukrainian war refugees. Critics say he lacks clear stances.
Nawrocki's Controversial Campaign
The PiS relies on Nawrocki to reclaim power. His nationalist rhetoric emphasizes "Poland first, Poles first," promising to prioritize Poles for social benefits and healthcare access. However, his campaign has been marred by controversies, including ties to gangsters, neo-Nazis, and a scandal involving an elderly man's apartment. Despite these issues, he is advancing in the election, making the runoff likely.
