Colombian Presidential Candidate Miguel Uribe Suffers Serious Gunshot Injuries

- Presidential candidate in Colombia, Uribe, sustains gunshot wounds.

Miguel Uribe Turbay, a leading candidate for the 2026 Colombian presidential election, was brutally attacked during a campaign rally in Bogotá, being shot twice in the head and once in the knee. His current condition is critical, having undergone both neurosurgical and peripheral vascular procedures.

The alleged shooter, a 14-year-old individual, was apprehended by authorities soon after the incident. Two more people were also injured during the attack.

At the campaign event, Uribe was delivering a speech when gunshots echoed. Shocking images circulated online show the politician being supported by several men due to his injuries. According to reports, Uribe was shot from behind.

The authorities have offered a reward of approximately 615,000 euros for any information leading to the clarification of the attack. The Colombian government, under leftist President Gustavo Petro, has vehemently condemned the attack as an affront to democracy and the very essence of Colombian politics.

Following the incident, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the attack a "direct threat to democracy." While indirectly blaming President Petro, Rubio asserted that the attack was the result of "violent leftist rhetoric from the highest levels of the Colombian government."

Uribe bears a political rivalry with Petro and had announced his intention to run for presidency in 2026. He is a member of the Democratic Center, a political party led by his close relative, former President Álvaro Uribe, who condemned the attack as an "attack on the hope for the country."

The attack on Uribe serves as a stark reminder of the deep-rooted political violence that has plagued Colombia's history. Uribe's mother, Diana Turbay, was a renowned journalist kidnapped by the Medellín cartel of notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar. She tragically lost her life during a failed military rescue attempt in 1991.
