Presidential aspirant in Colombia met with tragedy, succumbing to gunshot wounds sustained in June.

In a shocking turn of events, Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay has tragically lost his life following an attack during a rally in Bogota on June 7. Uribe, a member of the Democratic Center party, had announced his intention to run in the May 2026 presidential election.

The 15-year-old suspect, allegedly the gunman, was arrested at the scene. Initial reports suggest he acted for money from a drug dealer, but the full motive remains unclear. Six suspects have been arrested in connection with the case, including individuals accused of logistical support, planning, reconnaissance, and serving as an escape driver.

Elder José Arteaga Hernández, also known as "Chipi" or "Costeño," is a possible mastermind behind the assassination attempt. Authorities believe he ordered the attack, although the connection to any dissident group of the defunct FARC guerrilla group is not directly established in this article.

Uribe was shot three times, twice in the head. His condition had returned to critical after suffering a new brain hemorrhage related to the assassination attempt. His wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, announced the sad news on her Instagram account, and the attack has been met with mourning and a demand for justice among the Colombian people.

Uribe leaves behind a young son and three teenage daughters. The attack has revived fears of a return to the violence of the 1980s and 1990s in Colombia.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed solidarity with Uribe's family and the Colombian people, demanding justice following the announcement of his death. Rubio's statement was made on social media platform X. The left-wing President Gustavo Petro, currently in office in Colombia, has linked the assailant's social difficulties to his background and prior involvement in the "Youth in Peace" program, but no direct political motive has been formally confirmed.

Investigations continue regarding how the weapon used, legally purchased in Arizona, entered Colombia. The case highlights ongoing concerns about political violence in Colombia and the influence of criminal elements.
