Spain's Clavijo and Sánchez to Discuss Canary Islands Agenda

The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, is set to meet with the President of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, before the end of August. The exact date for the meeting has not been disclosed, but both cabinets have been in contact to arrange the discussion.

The agenda for the meeting will focus on matters of mutual concern, primarily the elaboration of a specific Decree Law to address outstanding issues for the Canary Islands. The Decree Law will aim to secure measures vital for the islands, such as a 60% Personal Income Tax deduction for La Palma citizens and support for the island’s reconstruction.

Other key topics include the urgent acceleration of the transfer and care of unaccompanied migrant minors, addressing overcrowding issues as urged by the Supreme Court. The meeting will also discuss migration issues and improving controls on the Atlantic migration route, which has recently seen a near 50% decrease in arrivals via the Canary route.

Broader topics include budget matters related to the Canary Islands and government support for housing rights and the region’s status as an ultraperipheral unique region in Spain. Clavijo has expressed his eagerness to meet with Sánchez and has offered to draft the decree law themselves to avoid delays seen with omnibus decrees or budget approvals.

In a separate matter, the Spanish Government has warned that the attack on Palestinian journalists in Gaza "cannot go unpunished". However, the meeting between Clavijo and Sánchez is not related to this issue.

Meanwhile, Pedro Sánchez is currently vacationing in La Mareta, Lanzarote. The meeting between Clavijo and Sánchez is intended to discuss matters of mutual concern and both leaders appear to be eager to meet.

Elsewhere, the Spanish political landscape has been marked by controversy. The leader of the opposition, Alberto Nuñez Feijoó, has criticized another politician, Luís María Puente, for joking about the suffering caused by the Castilla y León fire. Feijoó called for "sensitivity and respect" in such difficult times.

In a different context, it was reported that one in four luxury homes are located in the Balearic Islands. The meetings between the cabinets were initiated between late July and early August.

Puente has also been criticized for labeling Manuela Carmena and her Environment Minister as "shameless" for partying during the fires. These incidents highlight the ongoing political tensions in Spain.
