The President's Spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, Hits Back at Akinwumi Adesina's Economic Criticism, Comparing Him to Peter Obi
Presidency Addresses Adesina's Peter Obi-like Speech
According to our website, Akinwumi Adesina, the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), took a swipe at President Bola Tinubu's government, claiming that Nigerians are poorer today than they were in the 1960s due to the current economic policies. In response, Bayo Onanuga, the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, fired back at Adesina, accusing him of making false claims and likening him to Peter Obi for making unverified statements.
In his earlier response, Onanuga did not mention Peter Obi in his refutation of Adesina's statements. However, in a letter he tagged as a 'correction', Onanuga took a swipe at Adesina, stating that he spoke like Obi and failed to do due diligence before making his unverifiable statement.
The statement read, in part: "Nigeria has made remarkable progress since 1960. Today, the GDP, although awaiting recalibration, is at least 50 times, if not 100 times, more than it was at Independence.
"Adesina spoke like a politician, in the mold of Peter Obi, and did not do due diligence before making his unverifiable statement."
Bayo Onanuga is a seasoned public servant, currently serving as the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Before this role, he served as a Special Adviser for Environment & Urban Development to the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory from 2011 to 2015. He has also been involved in political activities, including a failed attempt to become a senator.
With his role as a Special Adviser for Information and Strategy, Onanuga is likely to respond to economic criticism by:
- Highlighting Government Initiatives: He might emphasize the government's efforts to address economic challenges, such as improving infrastructure and attracting foreign investment.
- Defending Policy Decisions: Onanuga would likely provide explanations for the government's economic policies, framing them as part of a broader strategy to stabilize and grow the economy.
- Engaging with Critics: As a public relations figure, he might engage directly with critics like Adesina and Obi to address their concerns and provide counterpoints to their criticisms.
Without specific details on the criticisms made by Adesina and Obi, it's difficult to predict a precise response from Onanuga. However, his role suggests he would focus on presenting a positive image of the government's economic policies and initiatives.
