In a speech delivered in the Uhland building, Sigmar Gabriel, the Foreign Minister, expressed gratitude to the Mühlackerans for their historical contributions to the homeland of Barbarossa. He also acknowledged the importance of Germany's connections to Europe, emphasising that isolation is not beneficial.

The historic icon, Ulrich von Dürmenz, once played a significant role in defending Barbarossa's homeland, where Gabriel was later born in Goslar. Gabriel finds the concept of homeland modern and important for the care of cities and communities.

The coalition talks to form a new government following the historic electoral defeat of the SPD are set to begin. The person who led the exploratory talks about this potential alliance and publicly supported the outcome in the press was Friedrich Merz, the CDU candidate for Chancellor.

Katja Mast, a Member of the German Bundestag, has agreed to start coalition talks on Sunday. She believes that much more was achieved in these exploratory talks than in the Jamaica talks between CDU, FDP, and Greens. One of the significant achievements is the abolition of nursery fees and the possibility for the federal government to contribute funds.

However, Katja Mast also expressed concern about the increase in the pension level, stating that it is a demand that no government will ever be able to reverse. Martin Kunzmann, DGB State Chairman, took a combative stance in his speech, advocating for a grand coalition and criticising the exploratory paper's proposed pension level of 48% by 2020.

Gabriel expressed concern about the high level of suspicion towards the government and media in the current world. He believes that Germany must be a voice of peace and start exchanging views at the negotiating table.

Germany, an export nation, relies heavily on its European neighbours, with 60% of its exports going to other European countries. The media interest in the SPD's New Year's reception was so great that it attracted running television cameras. Sigmar Gabriel responded to the media attention with a smile and a comment about making a headline.

Kunzmann also expressed concern about the AfD and the need for unity to defend democracy. He took a combative stance in his speech, advocating for a grand coalition and criticising the exploratory paper's proposed pension level of 48% by 2020.

The talks will be crucial in determining the future direction of Germany and its relationship with Europe. Gabriel expressed gratitude to the Mühlackerans for their historical contributions and emphasised the importance of unity and dialogue in these challenging times.
