Cold Snap Hits Yakutia in Mid-August 2025

Yakutia, also known as the Sakha Republic, is bracing for a cold snap in mid-August, according to a forecast shared by Tatyana Marshalik, Deputy Head of Yakutia's Hydrometeorological Center.

The temperature in the northern regions of Yakutia is expected to drop by 8-13°C on 6 August, with daytime highs around 10–15 °C and nighttime lows around 3–9 °C from August 13–16 [1][3][5]. This marks a significant drop from the preceding summer days which had highs in the mid-20s to low 30s °C.

The cold snap is expected to affect primarily the central and eastern parts of Yakutia, including Yakutsk, Oymyakon, Momsky, and Tomponsky districts. The cold wave is expected to last from August 15–20 [1][3][5].

The weather in Yakutia is forecast to change with an Arctic air mass from the north, which is also expected to bring wind gusts of 15-20 meters per second in the Olenek, Zhigansky, Verkhoyansky, and Evensk-Bytantaysky districts on 6 August. Overnight frosts of -2°C are expected in some regions of Yakutia, specifically in the Mirninsky and Viluisky groups of districts.

Thunderstorms with strong winds are forecast for riverine and southeastern regions on 6 August, while rain of varying intensity is expected, particularly in the northeast and mountains. In contrast, a warm air mass from Primorye will move into southeastern, southern, and western regions, as well as the center of Yakutia on Sunday.

This forecast reflects an early cold period unusually arriving in August, which is consistent with regional climatic patterns where the cold season can begin early especially in Siberian areas. The cold snap follows several weeks of warmer summer temperatures in the 20–30 °C range.

It's important to note that no specific immediate cold snap warnings are found for early August, but mid-August is forecasted to see this notable temperature drop [1][3][5]. Residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the cold snap approaches.
