The Western Cape, Central Karoo, Little Karoo, Namakwa District, and parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape are bracing themselves for a challenging weather system that is set to bring cold, wet, and windy conditions to these regions.

According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), residents in these areas should be prepared for potentially dangerous weather conditions, including freezing temperatures, snowfall, strong winds, and rainy conditions.

In the Eastern Cape, a yellow level 1 snow warning has been issued for July 31, 2025. Residents are advised to take precautions, such as preparing for icy road conditions and traffic disruptions, especially in high-lying areas where surface temperatures will drop below freezing. Drivers are urged to drive cautiously to avoid accidents due to slippery and icy roads. Additionally, pet and livestock owners should ensure their animals are adequately sheltered from the freezing temperatures during the cold front.

The Western Cape and Northern Cape will face similar cold and wet weather, with damaging winds and high waves along the Western Cape coast (from Saldanha Bay to Cape Agulhas and spreading toward Plettenberg Bay and Alexander Bay). The Namakwa District and interior Western Cape will be affected as well. Farmers in these areas are urged to protect their animals and exercise caution against strong coastal winds and waves.

KwaZulu-Natal will experience damaging winds with potentially extreme fire danger in its northern parts due to the dry, windy conditions accompanying the cold front.

SAWS advises that the weather system is likely to be particularly hazardous in high-altitude regions of KwaZulu-Natal. The service also urges residents, particularly farmers, in rural areas to take steps to protect their livestock and pets.

Overall, the cold front and associated high-pressure system will bring widespread disruptive weather across these provinces, especially in elevated and coastal regions. Residents are advised to prepare for hazardous travel conditions, protect livestock, and ensure safety measures around their homes and farms.
