Commanders QB Situation Uncertain as Daniels Deals with Knee Injury

The Washington Commanders are preparing for their upcoming game against the Las Vegas Raiders, but uncertainty surrounds their starting quarterback. Marcus Mariota is set to start for the Commanders on Sunday, but the status of Jayden Daniels, who led his team to the NFC Championship Game last season, remains uncertain due to a knee injury.

Daniels, who was the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year last season after being selected second overall by the Commanders, appeared to be limping near the end of Washington's 27-18 loss at Green Bay last Thursday. Coach Dan Quinn stated that Daniels will not practice on Wednesday and is being managed cautiously.

Despite the ailment, Daniels played the entire game, completing 24 of 42 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns while being sacked four times. However, Quinn has been cautious with Daniels' knee injury, stating that he needs to get back on the field in a team setting before he is comfortable playing him on Sunday.

Mariota, who is set to make his 77th career NFL start for the Commanders on Sunday, played in three games for the Commanders last season in relief of Daniels, completing 77.3% of his passes for 364 yards with four touchdowns and zero interceptions.

The Commanders have gone 1-1 in the two games Daniels has played this season, with the team's only win coming against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1. In those two games, Daniels connected on 59.7% of his passes for 433 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.

Coach Quinn has stated that Daniels has a return-to-play checklist to complete before he can be considered for starting against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. Quinn will provide an update on Daniels' status by Friday, but the exact time when it will be announced whether Daniels will be available for the game is not specified.

If Daniels is unable to play, Mariota will be relied upon to deliver at the standard he has set with the franchise as an "elite player and leader." Mariota, who was the Heisman Trophy winner at Oregon, has shown flashes of brilliance during his time with the Commanders.

The Commanders will be hoping for a healthy Daniels to return to the field as soon as possible, as his dynamic playmaking ability has been a key factor in their success over the past season. However, Quinn has emphasised the importance of taking a cautious approach to Daniels' recovery to ensure he is fully fit and ready to lead the team to victory.

Stay tuned for updates on Daniels' status ahead of Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
