A beacon for snooker enthusiasts since 1977, the Crucible has been hosting the Snooker World Championship every year. Established in 1927, it's the oldest professional snooker tournament, and this year's event is no exception!
Snooker's OriginsYou might be wondering where this captivating game came from. Snooker's roots can be traced back to 1875, when British officer Neville Chamberlain invented the game during his stay in Jabalpur, India. The name "Snooker" emerged from the term used for new cadets, who were dubbed "snookers." As it made its way to England, snooker grew to become a globally played game, with Joe Davis leading the pack as a dominant force.
Qualifying for the ChampionshipThe 2025 World Championship will witness 32 players from across the globe vying to be crowned the champion. The top 16 players on the World Snooker Rankings secure an automatic spot. Those who don't rank within the top 16 still have a shot, with the opportunity to qualify at the Halo 2025 World Championship qualifiers, which is currently ongoing and will wrap up on April 16, 2025. The top 16 players from the qualifier event will earn a place in the prestigious Snooker World Cup.
The Competition Awaits

Second RoundEight matches are scheduled for the second round, with each match consisting of 25 frames. The player that reaches 13 frames first secures the win and moves on to the quarter finals.
Quarter FinalsThe competition narrows down to four matches in the quarter finals, with players still playing 25 frames in a match. The first to 13 frames takes the win.

Predictions and OddsAccording to pundits, a South African player has yet to make a mark at the final, with Fred van Rensburg reaching it in 1966 but ultimately falling short. Sky-high expectations lie with Kyren Wilson, the 2024 World Champion, who is currently ranked number two and a favorite to win. Judd Trump, world number one, also boasts strong odds due to his consistent performances throughout the season. Mark Selby, a four-time World Champion, is another top prospect, despite his recent inconsistencies. Lastly, a newcomer to keep an eye on is Michal Szubarczyk, the youngest professional Snooker player ever at just 14 years old.
