1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig Mires in Promotion Playoff History

After a 1:1 draw against TSV Havelse in the first leg of the promotion playoff, 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig risks repeating a five-year-old mistake. The second leg, set for Sunday (13:30 CET/MagentaSport), will determine whether Leipzig can break their playoff drought.

Five years ago, in 2020, Leipzig drew 2:2 at home against SC Verl and 1:1 away, eventually losing out on the away goals rule. This time around, a draw would not suffice for either team.

Sporting director Toni Wachsmuth acknowledges the urgency. "Both teams still have a chance. It was important that we equalized. A 0:1 would have made it harder," said Wachsmuth, as Dorian Cevis scored the equalizer in stoppage time to cancel out Havelse's lead.

Coach Jochen Seitz remained optimistic, despite the draw and a goalless return leg looming. "When Havelse celebrated their 1:0, I thought they'd already won," said Seitz, referencing their first-season successes in leading Leipzig to the Regionalliga title and Saxon Cup victory.

Leipzig's attack was lackluster, failing to create may chances and apply pressure. Top striker Stefan Maderer, who missed the game due to a muscle pull, is expected to return, offering new options in the final third.

The 2020 playoffs against SC Verl and the 2025 encounter with TSV Havelse have been tumultuous for Leipzig, with late drama, disciplinary issues, and narrow defeats. The club has come close but missed out on promotion on both occasions (1, 2, 4).

The outcome on Sunday will determine whether Leipzig can finally progress to the 3. Liga or face another heartbreak in the promotion playoffs.
