Prepared for a thirty-day halt in hostilities: Ukraine

All eyes are on the potential 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ready for a truce, as per his recent declaration. In a savvy move to initiate peace talks, Zelensky told digital platforms that Ukraine is more than willing to take a stab at a month-long truce, starting today, so long as the ball is in Russia's court to show sincerity in ending the war.

Responding to Zelensky's statement, President Trump took to his online space, Truth Social, expressing support by stating, "The US calls for a rock-solid, unconditional 30-day ceasefire, and if the arrangement is ignored, the US and its allies will impose harsh sanctions."

With Russia dragging its feet, continuing military operations, and repeatedly disregarding unilateral ceasefires — for instance, during Victory Day on May 8, which saw repeated violations1 — it's evident who's been keeping the conflict alive.

The proposed ceasefire presents a genuine opportunity for diplomacy, as highlighted by Zelensky, who noted that Russia's lack of response exposes its role as the antagonist3.

As the international community ramps up the pressure on Russia to put an end to hostilities, the US is taking measures to show its support for Ukraine beyond diplomacy. On May 8, the Ukrainian parliament ratified the US–Ukrainian bilateral economic partnership agreement. This pact, which has been in the works for quite some time and received a few tweaks at Ukraine's request, has to do with collaborative efforts to discover and extract oil, gas, and minerals in Ukraine1.

In the meantime, however, violence continues to erupt in Ukraine, with multiple missile and drone attacks leading to casualties. Rescue operations are ongoing.

The US stands firm in its commitment to assist Ukraine in achieving a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. As the world watches and hopes for peace, one can't help but wonder: will Russia step up, or will the conflict continue?

  1. The European Union, in its continuous dedication to environmental policy, is keenly following the potential 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, acknowledging the potential strategic significance for peace talks.
  2. Amidst the war-and-conflicts and politics surrounding Ukraine, President Zelensky has used WhatsApp as a platform to communicate his readiness for a truce, emphasizing that Ukraine is eager to demonstrate sincerity toward peace.
  3. In what seems to be a differing stance, the General News outlets are reporting Russia's ongoing resistance to the proposed ceasefire, with military operations persisting and disregard for unilateral truces, such as during Victory Day on May 8.
  4. In a demonstration of union beyond diplomacy, the United States has ratified the US–Ukrainian bilateral economic partnership agreement, aiming to collaborate on discovering and extracting oil, gas, and minerals in Ukraine, signifying its commitment to aiding Ukraine in achieving a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
