Let's Talk About Ukraine's 30-Day Ceasefire Proposal Post Trump Chat
Prepared for a 30-day truce amid ongoing conflict
In a recent phone conversation, Volodymyr Zelensky, president of Ukraine, and Donald Trump, former U.S. president, discussed the potential for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. Announcing the discussion on social media on the evening of May 9, 2025, Zelensky revealed that Ukraine is eager for this unconditional ceasefire to commence immediately.
However, for negotiations to occur, Zelensky emphasized that Russia must show genuine intent to end the war by demonstrating an unconditional ceasefire first.
Following the chat, Trump echoed the call for a ceasefire, assuring on his online platform that a 30-day unconditional ceasefire is what the USA advocates. If this truce is not maintained, the USA and its partners will impose additional sanctions.
Notably, the conversation between Zelensky and Trump also touched upon the Ukraine-USA resource agreement. This agreement, which has been painstakingly negotiated, was tweaked at Ukraine's request before it was officially signed at the end of April 2025. The Ukrainian parliament sealed the deal on the same day the call occurred. This agreement concerns the joint exploration of oil, gas, and minerals in Ukraine.
The situation remains tense on the ground, as Russian forces reportedly violated a separate 72-hour ceasefire, initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin, more than 700 times during the first day of the truce—a clear indication of the hurdles in establishing and maintaining a ceasefire without reciprocal actions from Russia.
On a positive note, Ukraine is also pushing forward with peace talks, as evidenced by the Lviv summit where foreign ministers endorsed the establishment of a special tribunal to prosecute Russian and allied leadership for crimes of aggression. This move showcases Ukraine's multi-faceted approach, blending calls for peace with efforts towards accountability.
