In the ever-evolving world of health and wellness, ready-to-drink (RTD) shakes have emerged as a popular choice for consumers on-the-go. The global marketplace for these convenient beverages is projected to reach an impressive USD 22.2 billion by 2034, according to recent projections.

One of the key drivers of this growth is the post-workout market, with companies like General Mills launching Light & Fit High Protein Shakes to cater to this demand. The high protein segment already captured a significant 41.7% share in 2024, a testament to its popularity.

Chocolate continues to dominate the RTD shakes marketplace, holding a 44.3% share in 2024. However, brands are innovating with fresh plant-based twists and fun flavors to cater to diverse tastes. Kellogg's is expanding its Special K brand into the RTD protein shake segment, while Danone has launched Ensure Complete, a new plant-based RTD shake for senior nutrition.

Kraft Heinz has partnered with Orgain for its RTD shake strategy, focusing on the nutritional health segment. Meanwhile, Unilever has expanded its sustainable nutrition brand, OWYN, into stores like Walmart and Target.

The Asia-Pacific region is the fastest-growing stock market today, reflecting a growing awareness and interest in health and wellness in the region.

In terms of distribution, supermarkets and hypermarkets led the way in 2024, accounting for a 37.8% share. North America held a 43.7% share of the global RTD shakes stock market in 2024, valued at USD 4.8 billion.

However, it's important to note that studies have linked protein supplements to hepatotoxicity, raising risks of liver injury, failure, and in severe cases, death. Furthermore, nearly 69.4% of protein supplement products reviewed contained less protein than claimed.

Shelf-stable high-protein dairy beverages are classified based on acidity and pH levels. Beverages with water activity (aw) >0.85 and pH >4.6 fall under low-acid foods, while those with aw >0.85 and pH ≤4.6 are treated as acidified foods.

The stock market today is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.1% between 2025 and 2034. Despite the concerns about protein supplements, the convenience and versatility of RTD shakes continue to make them everyday heroes for health on the move.
