Prepared athletic sports schedule for the academic years 2025-2026 has been made public
The 2025-26 high school football season in New Mexico has officially begun, marking the start of a 9.5-month prep sports calendar. On Monday, teams across the state kicked off their training, with 119 teams getting ready for the upcoming season.
One of the most anticipated events in the season is the state championship day for the upper divisions, scheduled for Nov. 30. The Class 6A division, in particular, promises to be a thrilling spectacle, with La Cueva and Valley expected to be prominently in the mix. Last season, La Cueva graduated key players, but their talent-laden team of veterans is poised to make a strong comeback. Valley, on the other hand, reached the state quarterfinals in the previous season and is one of the teams whose performance is anticipated in Class 4A.
In Class 5A, the southern district dominated the previous season, producing all four semifinal teams. Valley is expected to return to the postseason, while Legacy Academy, previously in 8-Man, transitioned to Class 2A last year and started with nine consecutive victories before losing their last two games. Joey Romero is the new head coach of Legacy Academy, replacing Bryan Clampitt.
Ruidoso, a team that faced challenges due to flooding and finished the previous season with a 2-9 record, has a new head coach for the 2025 season. Highland, who won a playoff game last season, may see a change in performance due to the graduation of their bruising superstar back, Amiri Mumba. Sandia and Cibola also have new coaches for the upcoming season.
One of the top returning quarterbacks, Jordan Hatch, plays for Cleveland, a team that won the 6A state championship last year. St. Pius is considered a strong contender for the Class 4A state championship. The first games are scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 21, with Volcano Vista-La Cueva, Valley-Bernalillo, and Manzano-Highland starting the games in the metro area.
As of now, no expert or media sources have published season previews or predictions specifically for New Mexico high school football’s top 6A division for 2025-26. For more accurate or up-to-date forecasts, local New Mexico sports websites, high school athletic associations, or regional sports news outlets would be the best sources closer to or during the season.
