Ready, Set, Berlin: The City's Olympic Push Gains Steam

Get ready for some serious competition, folks! Berlin is ready to throw its hat into the ring and vie for the honor of hosting the Summer Olympics. The city has thrown its cap in the ring alongside four other German states under the banner "Berlin+."

The Berlin Sports Federation (LSB) is rallying the citizens' support for this bid, hoping to gather the necessary momentum. LSB President, Thomas Härtel, announced that they'll be launching a popular initiative to collect 20,000 signatures within six months to get the discussion going in the parliament. Given the 809,000 members, Härtel is confident they can overcome this hurdle with ease.

The city's Sports Senator, Iris Spranger, is already feeling the competitive spirit. Spranger hopes the momentum will spread across sports clubs, associations, businesses, and social organizations.

Berlin's not the only one eyeing the Olympic torch, though. Cities like Munich, Hamburg, and North Rhine-Westphalia with the Rhine and Ruhr region are also aiming for the gold. But let's not forget the DOSB President, Thomas Weikert, who finds himself in a tricky spot, given his neutral stance on the candidates. Weikert praised Berlin's bid, but stressed that all candidates have strong bids, with a selection committee yet to be named deciding the German candidate.

The final decision on the German contender is expected by autumn 2026, and will then require approval from DOSB members. The games Berlin aims to host could take place in 2036, 2040, or 2044.

However, not everyone's cheering for Berlin. A group of critics, calling themselves "NOlympia Berlin," have plans to thwart Berlin's Olympic dreams. This initiative seeks to prevent the games from taking place in Berlin, citing concerns about the impact of large-scale events and development projects on the city. Past opposition to developments at Tempelhof, a beloved city park, hints at possible resistance to significant changes in public spaces for the Olympics.

Experts predict Berlin has a solid chance, given its plans to keep things green by using existing sports venues like the Olympiastadion, and pioneering unique ideas such as skateboarding at Tempelhofer Feld and beach volleyball at Brandenburg Gate.

So, let's wait and see if Berlin's bid wins the hearts and minds of the Olympians!
