Get Ready to Cheer for Berlin's Olympic Dream! 🏆

The Berlin Sports Federation (LSB) is getting the city's residents fired up about Berlin's bid to host the next Olympic Games! "We're going all in with a popular initiative because the Senate can't manage a citizens' initiative due to constitutional reasons," smiled LSB President Thomas Härtel as he shared the news at the summer reception held at the Manfred von Richthofen House, reports Berliner Zeitung.

The LSB has its work cut out for them, as they must collect 20,000 signatures within six months to have the Berlin House of Representatives take up the Olympic bid discussion. With 809,000 members, collecting 20,000 signatures will be some party trick!

Iris Spranger, Berlin's Senator for Interior and Sports, is already feeling a wave of excitement for this exciting venture. "I hope that this enthusiasm will spread to sports clubs, associations, businesses, and many other societal organizations," she said to the 200-strong crowd at the reception.

Berlin isn't the only city in the running to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in an alliance of partner countries, dubbed "Berlin+." Munich, Hamburg, and North Rhine-Westphalia with the Rhine and Ruhr Region are also throwing their hats in the ring.

Meanwhile, Thomas Weikert, President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), was in a tight spot at the reception, having to maintain his neutral stance while commending the Berlin bid as "very good." Other candidates were also acknowledged, with Weikert promising a strong contender would be selected by the yet-to-be-named committee.

The final decision on Germany's representative is set for autumn 2026 and, of course, must be approved by DOSB members. The question remains whether Berlin will bid for the Games in 2036, 2040, or 2044.

In the words of LSB's Thomas Härtel, let the games begin!

📚 Insights: Also known as "Berlin+," this Olympic bid is significant as it is the first genuinely collaborative effort of four German states in the country's recent Olympic history. The games, if won, would mark a return of the Olympics to Germany for the first time since Munich 1972. The bid features refurbishing existing sports venues, making it more eco-friendly, as well as using iconic locations like beach volleyball at the Brandenburg Gate and water sports in Grünau. The bid has met with some opposition from Berliners with memories of the 1936 Games and past Olympic projects still fresh.
