The focus of the event will be the rediscovery of the Mallerbach chapel, a religious and community centre that played a crucial role in the lead-up to the German Peasants’ War (1524-1525). Archaeological research by the Landesamt für Denkmalpflege und Archäologie Sachsen-Anhalt uncovered the chapel's remnants in 2024, offering valuable insights into the spiritual practices and everyday lives of the people during this tumultuous era.
The event will feature two films, "The 'Devil at Mallerbach'. The Rediscovery of the Pilgrimage Chapel near Allstedt" and "For Freedom and Justice. Thomas Müntzer and the Peasants' War 1525". Directed by award-winning filmmaker Thomas Claus, these documentaries explore the personality of Thomas Müntzer, a key figure in the Peasants' War, and the historical context of the conflict in Central Germany.
The films are filmed at authentic locations, offering viewers an immersive experience. They also feature conversations with renowned scientists and historians, providing a comprehensive understanding of the events and their impact.
The event will begin at 6:30 PM and is expected to last approximately 90 minutes. Following the film premieres, a conversation between Harald Meller, Landesarchäologist, and Thomas Claus will take place. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the making of the documentaries and the significance of the Mallerbach chapel in the broader context of the Peasants' War.
Before the event, visitors can explore the cabinet exhibition "Closters. Plundered. In the turmoil of the peasants' uprisings" as an introduction to the topic. The exhibition can be visited from 5:30 PM.
