Living and Laughing in the Face of Death: "Last Breath Lunatics"

Sudden Demise: Novel 'Dying for Beginners' Loses Its Author Prematurely - Premature goodbye: "Guide for the Inevitable"

Most young folks don't give much thought to their own mortality. But what happens when Death comes knocking on your door at the ripe old age of 30? That's the premise of the dark comedy "Last Breath Lunatics," premiering on ZDF this Monday (5th May) at 8:15 PM.

Alex (Max Hubacher) simply can't believe it, cracking jokes about it — all the while grappling with an inoperable brain tumor. Terminally ill, Alex's life takes a drastic turn, leaving his parents (Steffi Kühnert and Wolfram Koch) and his pregnant girlfriend Karla (Svenja Jung) in a tailspin.

Even his best friend, Eric (Edin Hasanovic), struggles to cope. Spur of the moment, Eric slams the brakes on his career as a music manager and lands a job at a funeral home. Seems like Herr Mutz (Peter Kurth) has a strange fondness for unconventional ideas, and customers adore Eric's unique, heartfelt approach to sending off the departed.

But it's not long before life's tough topics rearing their ugly heads — wills, advance directives, and other unsavory matters that are necessary evils. Alex even ties the knot, something he hadn't planned on. Now, Karla, Mrs. Alex, must make the tough decisions about where and how her exceptionally lively husband will be laid to rest. This proves to be incredibly painful for his parents.

Directors Christian Klandt (46, "Here We Are") and Benedikt Gollhardt (58, "West Wall") drew inspiration for their film from "The Book of Death" by Eric Wrede. But "Last Breath Lunatics" is less about facts and more about the human experience, never becoming sentimental or awkward in its portrayal of loved ones watching their own fade away.

Max Hubacher (31, "Lost Sister," "Sisi") and Edin Hasanovic (33, "Perfectly Missed," "The Book Wanderer") portray two friends who are inextricably linked. Together, they find themselves learning the true value of losing someone while also cherishing every moment with them. The delicate dance between joy and sorrow is played out masterfully in this tragicomedy.
