Preliminary election results reveal the success of the recall effort against San Francisco Supervisor Engardio
San Francisco, CA - The District 4 special election results are still being tallied, with the election set to be certified in the coming weeks. However, preliminary results have provided some insight into the race.
According to the SF Elections page, a total of 15,468 mail-in votes have been counted so far. Of these, 9,969 votes were in favour of creating Sunset Dunes, amounting to approximately 65% of the votes counted. Conversely, the no votes account for about 35% of the votes, totalling 5,499 votes.
In a statement released just before 9:30 p.m., Mayor Daniel Lurie expressed gratitude towards Joel Engardio for his years of service and commitment to San Francisco. Engardio, who was facing a recall election, conceded on Tuesday.
The Friends of Sunset Dunes, a group advocating for the preservation of the popular park, stated that Engardio had the courage to let San Franciscans decide the future of their coast. They also believe that Sunset Dunes is here to stay and will continue to grow in popularity.
Sunset Dunes, one of the city's most beloved parks, brings joy to tens of thousands of people every week. It is accessible to people of all ages, including those using wheelchairs.
The election's preliminary results show that more voters in District 4 supported creating Sunset Dunes than those who voted to recall Joel Engardio. Daniel Lurie's team is currently evaluating next steps for the District Four supervisor seat.
As for the District 4 supervisor race, the search results do not yet provide information about who will officially take over once the elections are certified. The SF Elections page does not currently show data about the candidates' votes.
In a separate statement, the Friends of Sunset Dunes thanked District Four residents for participating in the special election. According to the SF Elections page, the turnout for the election was almost 31%.
As the election results continue to be counted, the community awaits the official certification, which will determine the future leadership of District 4.
