Predictions for Unbound Gravel's Outcome: Increased Hazards, Apprehension of Adverse Competition, and Mud – Experts Discuss Potential Scenarios

Race on the Edge: Unbound Gravel's Unpredictable Adventure

Every year, the gravel world gathers for Unbound Gravel, where uncertainty reigns supreme. The course is infamous for its challenges: the grueling 200-mile distance, treacherous terrain, and self-reliance are just a few obstacles competitors face. With no follow cars, riders must possess mechanical skills and carry sufficient water and supplies to last them up to 70 miles at a stretch. Even the fastest pros need more than 9 hours to conquer this beast.

Add to that the unpredictable weather, from unbearable heat waves to bike-destroying mud, and it's clear that this race is a rider's biggest adversary. Mud, in particular, has gained notoriety for causing crashes, clogged drivetrains, derailleur ripping incidents, and dashed dreams. But worry not, nature enthusiasts! The mud should dry out two days before the race, giving way to humidity and muggy conditions instead.

The race's unpredictable nature is what makes it so enthralling. And as race-favorite Sarah Sturm puts it, "I'm excited to see who wins Unbound." The global field is filled with hidden talents, and last year's breakout winner, Rosa Kloser, is only one example of the unknown contenders that could emerge victorious.

Predicting the outcome is practically fruitless, but we couldn't resist asking the pros for their expectations.

Women's Race: A Thrilling Showdown

The women's elite race saw an impressive nine-rider breakaway last year, with Rosa Kloser taking the title. However, a multi-rider sprint might not be everyone's cup of tea. Sarah Sturm expects more tactics this year, especially with mud playing a significant role in how the race unfolds. If a muddy road appears, it could divide the race, leading to an attrition-based competition.

Danni Shrosbree, currently sidelined by injury, shares Sturm's sentiments. She expects riders to attempt to split the group earlier this year, with mud playing a natural role but also creating opportunities for strategic attacks.

The rise of team tactics could also spice up the race. While informal teamwork was observed last year, organized teams like PAS Racing are increasingly becoming part of the gravel scene. Polish rider Karolina Migoń, a PAS member, is hopeful that her team can use tactics to their advantage, but she acknowledges the high level of competition, with at least 15 riders capable of winning Unbound.

Migoń struggled with mechanical issues during her Unbound debut last year, but she's confident this year. She aims to be in the front group and fight for the win, but with no pressure due to her repeat victory at the Traka.

Men's Race: A Show of Strength

Last year's men's elite race saw Lachlan Morton and Chad Haga escape for most of the race before Morton out-sprinted Haga for the win. However, such an escape is unlikely to repeat according to the prognostications. The competition is expected to be fierce, with riders ready to adopt more aggressive tactics and less conservative strategies.

The race could come down to a group of 2 to 8 riders, but don't count on seeing Alex Howes among them. He's hoping for a dynamic race and a plethora of tactics, but admits he's unlikely to be in the final group.
