Predicted trajectory and anticipated developments over the upcoming weekend
As the weekend approaches, Germany is bracing for a change in weather as a low-pressure system named "Friedemann" moves into the country from the northwest. This system is expected to bring wind, showers, and thunderstorms, marking a shift from the scorching heat of Wednesday that culminated in storms overnight and today, Thursday.
Over the weekend, Sunday is likely to remain mostly dry until late afternoon. However, there may be some rain showers approaching from the southwest by late Sunday, although models are split, and a dry scenario is currently favored. Temperatures will be mild, with highs in the mid 70s Fahrenheit (about 23-25°C), and more clouds than sun. Winds will come from the southeast at about 5-10 mph.
Early next week, from Monday to Tuesday, showers and scattered thunderstorms are possible. While mild temperatures aloft will limit storm development, wind conditions could support severe storms, so any storms that do develop should be closely monitored. Temperature will stay around the mid 70s Fahrenheit. The forecast remains uncertain, and increased atmospheric energy could raise the threat level.
Wednesday will see lower chances of thunderstorms but still some scattered showers expected. Overall, much of this period could be dry, with some areas receiving little to no rainfall.
In addition, local forecasts specific to Lower Saxony indicate cloudy weather with occasional showers on Thursday and a range of temperatures between 10 and 24°C during the day, suggesting a cooling trend as the low-pressure system influences the area.
The upcoming weekend and early next week in Germany are expected to bring mostly unsettled weather, including some rain showers and thunderstorms, especially from Monday onwards. However, a relatively dry and mild weekend is forecast, with a cooling trend as the low-pressure system moves in.
It's worth noting that in some areas not part of the official network of the German Weather Service, temperatures exceeded 40 degrees. The storms brought heavy rain and gusts of over 100 kilometers per hour, uprooting trees and significantly disrupting rail and road traffic. The storms raged heavily in the Lower Rhine and Münsterland, as well as in the district of Oldenburg. Wednesday was the hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures reaching 39.3 degrees in Andernach.
In the night from Thursday to Friday, there will be more shower-like and thunderstorm-like rainfall at the Alps, with heavy rain of 15 to 30 liters per square meter in some places. Sunday brings a weather change with wind, showers, and thunderstorms, and we must expect strong to stormy gusts, as well as heavy rain of up to 20 liters per square meter, especially in the southeastern half of the country.
However, the cool summer dip is expected to end midweek, and temperatures should get warmer and sunnier again. At the North Sea, temperatures will be around 20 degrees. Despite the unsettled weather, it's not much of a summer feeling due to the wind and showers making the weather rather uncomfortable.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing weather situation.
The Commission has also been consulted on the issue of weather-forecasting during the upcoming weekend and early next week in Germany, especially regarding the potential for rain showers and thunderstorms. Despite this, the forecast for Sunday remains mostly dry until late afternoon with mild temperatures and wind from the southeast at about 5-10 mph.
