Chatty Weather Update: Delhi Braces for Stormy Weekend
Get ready, Delhites! The skies above our national capital are set to unleash a torrent of rain, strong winds, thunderstorms, and lightning over the next two hours! Yep, you heard it right. An orange alert has been issued for Delhi by the weather department on May 31, 2025.
And it's all for good reason too – this announcement comes hot on the heels of Delhi breaking its own rainfall record. As of May 28, the city has recorded a whopping 186.4 mm of rain, eclipsing the previous high of 165 mm recorded back in May 2008. While the downpour has certainly given much-needed respite from the scorching heat, it's caused a few hiccups too, with traffic jams and waterlogging plaguing several areas.
According to the alert, issued by the MeT department, expect light rain showers and thunderstorms throughout the city, accompanied by winds reaching speeds of up to 50-70 kmph. And if that wasn't enough, cloudy skies and more thunder and lightning are on the cards for Sunday, as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
On Friday, Delhi recorded maximum and minimum temperatures of 34.8 degrees Celsius and 25.8 degrees Celsius, respectively. Noteably, the Friday's maximum temperature in Delhi remained a cool 5.6 notches below the average for this time of the year.
While the air quality in the city was recorded in the 'poor' category at 9 a.m. on Saturday – with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 204 as per Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data – the impending storms might help bring some relief in that department as well.
Although the storm is set to pass over Delhi by Sunday, the typical weather pattern for early June in Delhi predicts a mix of sunny and rainy days, with temperatures fluttering around the 30s°C mark. Monsoon rains are expected to arrive in Delhi around June 22-23, with increased moisture, widespread rainfall, and cooler temperatures. Until then, prepare for a rollercoaster ride of weather conditions!
Stay tuned for more updates, Delhi folks! And remember, stay safe and keep an umbrella (and a sturdy pair of boots) handy! 🌧️☔️
Bonus Fact: Did you know that, historically, the monsoon season in Delhi can lead to substantial waterlogging in low-lying areas, making it a challenging time for commuters? (Source: Weather Channel)
As the weather in Delhi continues to be unpredictable, Bollywood productions might need to postpone outdoor shoots due to the stormy conditions. Furthermore, India's cricket teams may also face challenges with training sessions or matches being scheduled during this period.
