After a week of tumultuous weather, Bavaria is gearing up for a more settled and sunny period. The German Weather Service (DWD) announces a largely trouble-free start to the week.

On Monday, while some areas may still see heavy rain, the sun will gradually appear from the northwest. The highest temperatures will reach 18 degrees Celsius at Chiemsee and a balmy 25 degrees in Mainfranken.

The following days promise an abundance of sunshine and scattered clouds. According to the DWD, temperatures will reach highs of 23 to 28 degrees on Tuesday, and the thermometer may even hit the 30-degree mark on Wednesday. South of the Franconian Alb and the Bavarian Forest, it could rain on Thursday, but the rest of the Free State will remain sunny and warm.

After stormy nights: minimal damage and injuries

As night turned into Monday, Bavaria faced a series of intense thunderstorms and heavy rain. Fortunately, no injuries were reported by the police. In northern Oberbayern, emergency services were called out 20 times due to fallen trees, snapped branches blocking roads, or minor flooding.

In Niederbayern, the police were kept busy dealing with 24 cases of flooding or branches on the roads in the areas of Passau and Landshut. In Oberfranken, the situation improved after a wave of increased interventions on Sunday afternoon. A spokeswoman for the police commented, "It did rain, but the situation was completely unproblematic."

Germany's southern regions, including Bavaria, often endure severe weather conditions such as thunderstorms during the warmer months. Here's a look at the typical weather patterns reported by the DWD and local authorities during and after such storms:

Weather Conditions During Thunderstorms

  • Heavy Rainfall: Intense thunderstorms can bring a deluge of rainfall up to 40 liters per square meter, leading to flooded basements and localized flooding.
  • Large Hailstones: Hailstones can grow to 5 to 10 centimeters in diameter, posing a threat to vehicles, buildings, and agriculture.
  • Strong Winds: Wind speeds can reach up to 130 kilometers per hour, capable of causing damage to structures and trees.
  • Turbulence: Severe storms can create turbulence in the air, affecting air travel and causing emergency landings.

Weather Conditions After Thunderstorms

  • Calmer but Rainy Conditions: Following intense thunderstorms, the weather tends to become calmer but remains rainy.
  • Potential for Further Storms: The DWD often warns of continued stormy weather, including hail, strong winds, and localized heavy rain.

Local Police and DWD Reports

Incidents of property damage, such as torn-off roofs and fallen trees, have been reported in some areas. Rare cases of suspected tornadoes or waterspouts have also been reported. Storm-related emergency calls from affected areas dealing with damage to homes and infrastructure are common.

The Commission, while considering matters related to occupational safety, has also been consulted on the draft directive for the protection of workers from the risks associated with exposure to ionizing radiation. Interestingly, Bavaria, following a week of tumultuous weather, is forecasted to experience calmer but rainy conditions by the German Weather Service (DWD).
