Precious yearlings by Flightline deemed exceptional finds at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale
In the world of thoroughbred racing, the quality of a sire's progeny is a key factor in determining their success. This year, the unbeaten 2022 Breeders' Cup Classic winner, Flightline, has taken the lead among first-crop sires, according to metrics such as Comparable Index (CI) and Class Performance Index (CPI).
Flightline, campaigned by Hronis Racing, Siena Farm, Summer Wind Equine, West Point Thoroughbreds, and Woodford Racing, has a remarkable first book of mares, boasting a CI of 6.84 and a CPI of 7.80. These figures place Flightline at the top of the rankings among all first-crop sires in 2025, suggesting that his progeny are expected to perform exceptionally well both in earnings and racing class compared to other sires' offspring.
The high-quality of Flightline's book of mares was evaluated through CI, which measures a sire’s progeny average earnings relative to mares’ previous mates, and CPI, which accounts for class performance. Terry Finley, president and CEO of West Point Thoroughbreds, described Flightline as a "beautiful horse with a solid mental side."
Nine yearlings, five fillies and four colts, sired by Flightline, will be offered at the Saratoga Sale on Monday and Tuesday. Among them is a yearling bred to Flightline and is the offspring of Grade 1 winner Hot Dixie Chick. Renowned bloodstock agent David Ingordo, who signed for the colt on behalf of West Point Thoroughbreds, described Flightline's yearlings as well-made, with his offspring showing his bone and presence.
Other notable yearlings include Hip 135, a filly out of the stakes-winning Galileo mare Key To My Heart, and Hip 208, a filly out of the Grade 1-placed Into Mischief mare Slam Dunk. Hip 59 is a filly out of multiple Graded winner and Graded producer Carolyn's Cat, while Hip 102 is a filly out of Graded winner Georgie's Angel, dam of multiple Grade 1 scorer Cave Rock. Hip 176 is a colt out of Graded-placed Quality Road mare Park Avenue, and Hip 111 is a colt out of multiple Graded producer Hennesey Smash.
While specific 2022 rankings for top first-crop sires by CI and CPI are not available, Flightline's evaluation suggests he surpasses other sires in metrics reflecting progeny earnings and class performance among first-crop sires. Other sires mentioned in 2025 include Cool Aza Beel, who has produced standout first-crop performers with promising commercial and racing potential.
Flightline, who broke his maiden on debut by 13 and a quarter lengths and retired with $4.5 million in earnings, is poised to set the bar high for his yearlings at the Saratoga Sale.
